Presidential Election Essay The first election of the millennium will take place on November 7th, 2000. The two most recognized candidates running are Al Gore who represents the Democratic Party and George W. Bush who represents the Republican Party. Gore is labeled as a liberal, who leans towards being a moderate in some issues. Bush is labeled as a conservative but takes many positions considered as moderate. Gore and Bush have very different views when it comes to issues such as a prescription drug plan, education, oil prices and the environment, taxes, and foreign policy.It is those issues that will decide the outcome of the race. The polls, that evaluate which candidate is in the lead, have been very turbulent in the past couple of weeks. Gore and Bush have both been in the lead at one point. Again, it is issues such as taxes and education that will determine the final outcome. Prescription drugs is one of the issues that Gore and Bush have made a priority. Gores plan for prescription drugs leans more towards the Democratic liberal side because of the level of government involved. Bushs plan for prescription drugs suggests that the States give relief to the Medicare system before the government steps in. Bush would rather have the government take a limited role in helping seniors pay their prescription drug costs. In the past 10 years prescription drug prices have nearly doubled. With high costs running from $80 to $100 a prescription, many seniors are spending their entire social security check on one prescription alone. The high cost of prescription drugs has become a really important issue between Gore and Bush. Gore and Bush have entirely different plans for prescription drugs. Gore wants to add a prescription drug benefit to Medicare. After paying a $25 monthly premium, a senior would be reimbursed half of all drug bills up to a maximum of five thousand in bills per year (Noonan 34). In addition, Gores plan would cover all prescription payments exceeding four thousand in out-of-pocket costs per year. Gores plan would help an estimated thirty-nine million seniors. Bushs plans for prescription drug cost differ from those of Gore. Bush wants to work with Congress to reform Medicare and in the meantime he will provide the States with forty-eight billion dollars for low-income seniors. The forty-eight billion dollars would help out low income seniors mainly for their prescriptions. Part of the forty-eight billion dollars would cover at least twenty five percent of the premiums for seniors buying health insurance, including drug coverage, from health insurance providers or Medicare. The bottom line is that Gore wants to reform Medicare by provding additions to the existing model. Bush wants to give money to the States who will help out seniors and have private insurers take a role in helping out low-income seniors.Another issue that both Gore and Bush are addressing is education. According to Newsweek magazine, voters believe that education is a top priority. Though education is funded at the state level, Gore and Bush have made it a hot issue. Gore and Bush are clear-cut Democrat and Republican on education reform. For example, Gore wants a federally developed test for all students. Bush would leave testing up to the States for students in the third to the eight-grade. Both Bush and Gore agree that schools should be accountable for results. When it comes to school funding, the two candidates have keen differences. Gore wants to hire turn-around experts who will examine the problems of failing schools. Also, Gore will make teachers take tests to prove they are worthy of being teachers. Gore will add bonuses to high student grades. Finally, Gore opposes public money being spent on private schools which Bush believes in. How to Write a Writing Sample for a Job

Cant escape it, eh? The dreaded writing sample. Also known as writing clips if you wanna get all fancy. You need it to show prospects you can write and prospects use writing samples to ensure the person they hire for content writing is knowledgeable in their industry topic. Its a tall order to fill, especially if youre a new online writer. Having a writing sample is one of the tools you need to start freelance writing, and without it, its going to be hard to land gigs. A writing sample also has a lot of requirements too like the writing topic and how long should a writing sample be anyways? In this post, Ill dive deep into writing samples from what it is to why you need them to how to create a writing sample for your job and more. What is a Writing Sample? A writing sample is the best representation of your writing skill and writing ability that shows your expertise in a topic. A writing sample comes in many different forms blog posts, emails, brochures, landing page copy, books, magazine article, or ad copy. As an online writer, having a writing sample blog post would be ideal because its one of the best representations of online writing there is. But, if you want to be a copywriter, then providing a writing sample email or ad copy for a shoe store can be a better show of copywriting. Why You Need a Writing Sample You might be wondering why writing samples are needed anyways. A while back, I had a kid tech company reach out for content writing. They wanted a writing sample because they werent confident that I could write about tech stuff. Made sense since the content they knew me about was about parenting and digital marketing. So, I chose to do an un-paid 300-word writing sample on the Gro Clock. Unpaid 300-word writing sample If you know my story, then you know that product description writing is something I loathe! But, now I only dislike it. But, this writing sample I did for the Gro Clock was extremely fun for me. Why? Because I had a Gro Clock and the story I shared is a legit true story. My twins love their Gro Clock, and they do not get out of bed until the sun shows. So, I had a strong feeling towards this product, making it a cinch to write about it. And, since it was less than 500 words, I felt it unnecessary to get paid for this sample. From this example, if a client isnt sure you can write for them, they may seek out a writing sample. I highly suggest you ask for a paid writing sample instead of opting for a free one. Why would I say this when I clearly showed you I produced a free sample of my writing? Because I was at a point that I could pick my clients and I mostly work with profitable businesses that value content marketing. So, there was no doubt that they would pay for my writing, if they hired me. But, if youre a new freelance writer with no writing samples and a prospect asks for one get paid for it! Another reason why you need writing samples is simply to show prospects you are a legit writer and not a hobby blogger. If you visit any mom blog or home decor blog out there, they most definitely dont have a writing samples page. Thats because they are a blogger and not a writer. To stand out from other bloggers, have a portfolio page, or writing sample page with your writing samples. My portfolio page This immediately makes you look more professional and experienced. Cant I just use my blog as writing samples? Yes, you can, but there are some exceptions to this. I was able to land some gigs with my passion blog, Twins Mommy, but they were few and far between. So, if you have a blog with audience-driven content and you dont need to make a living as a writer, then go ahead and start a blog, have fun and see if you can land some writing work. However, most of you out there want to make a living writing! If so, having a dedicated writer website is what will get you to that point. Guaranteed! And yes, you can have a blog on your writer website. This is just supplemental, however, and shouldnt be the only writing samples you showcase. Finally, having a writing sample can prove to prospects that other people hired you or published your work. A great way to create writing samples is to guest post. This shows easily that other people love your writing so much, they decided to publish your work on their blog. How Long Should a Writing Sample Be? As you can see from my example, I wrote a 300-word sample piece. But, in general, your writing sample should be between 800-1200 words if you are writing a blog post. For other forms of content, it can be shorter or longer emails are less than 500 words and books start at 10k words. Remember, employers or blog owners dont have time to read lengthy blog posts. So, its in your best interest to provide valuable content in around 1,000 words. Jobs that Require a Writing Sample For jobs that need strong writing skills or journalism-type jobs, writing samples are a given. So, as a freelance writer for hire online having writing samples on a portfolio page just makes sense. So, typical content jobs that need a writing sample might be: Blogging jobs Copywriting jobs Magazine jobs Remote writing jobs Jobs that require writing Writing Sample Template The writing sample template Ill share is for a standard blog post. Writing sample template for a blog post For your writing sample blog post, the set up is: Introduction provide a hook and promise of what your reader will learn in your post Body this is where you break down your blog post into subheadings and actionable ideas Conclusion All writing samples should have a conclusion paragraph. Clients like to see this! CTA this is your call-to-action. Give your readers something to do like share your post. Remember, this is a mock-up sample of what a blog post would be. Of course, you can use this writing sample template for all your blog writing and guest posting. This is the template I use for my blogs too! Headline The headline you choose should be optimized for engagement. You want to use superlatives (if appropriate) and use powerful words that convert. Remember, you want your writing samples to signal to prospects that your blog post could potentially be on their website. So when crafting that headline, think about a prospects website and brand and how you can infuse that personality in your headline. Introduction The introduction of your writing sample needs to hook a reader in immediately. Prospects dont have a lot of time to read your content, so if you can draw them in at once, they will stick around and read your writing sample. Some ways to start your introduction are: Use a question Use a shocking statistic Use a bucket brigade You should also frame your introduction as a top-down process you introduce the broad topic and narrow it down to the problem you are discussing and the solution you will share. Body The body of your writing sample should be anchored with subheadings. This shows prospects you know how to write for an online audience since this is mostly specific to online writing. When creating your outline, each point in your blog post should be a subheading. For example, if you want to talk about whether or not Instagram is great for business, I may talk about these ideas: What is Instagram? Businesses already using Instagram How can you get started using Instagram Instagram bio Instagram stories etc. As I think about my blog post idea for my writing sample, I can pinpoint the discussions I want to cover. As Im writing, I can decide if these topics warrant a subheading. Conclusion Your conclusion paragraph should artfully summarize your blog post. This conveys to prospects they will get an entire blog post when they hire you. CTA As an added bonus to your writing sample, add a CTA. This call-to-action makes your writing sample legit and real. You can have readers share your post or you can ask a question to elicit comments. Where to Display Your Writing Samples Now that you have your writing samples, where do you house them? Lets look at some popular places you can showcase your writing samples. 1. Your Portfolio Page Your blog, or writer website, is a great place to house your samples. You want one central hub online to promote and share with prospects. Your writer website fulfills that job! On your blog, you can set up a Portfolio page or Samples page and display them there. Compare and Contrast Essay Love is an emotion that deeply alters a person’s thought-process. This emotion can bring out the best of people or even make them question who they are and what they’re willing to give up for the person they love. In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s short story â€Å"Catch the Moon†, she suggests that love can change a person for the better by making them want to improve themselves. However, in W. D. Wetherell’s short story â€Å"The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant†, he suggests that love can make a person try to be someone they are not, ultimately leading in disappointment and regret. Although both authors center their stories on the topic of love, they differ greatly from their character conflicts, character changes, conflict resolutions, and their themes. In â€Å"Catching the Moon†, Luis Cintron and his father constantly argue and never get along very well. However, when Luis meets this girl named Naomi, he experiences an emotion that reconnects him with his dad. Meeting Naomi causes Luis to experience love—an emotion he hasn’t felt since the death of his mother—and causes him to want to develop better character because he knows that his mother would want him to be happy. In order to prove his improved character to both Naomi and his dad, Luis searches all night for a hubcap that will match the one that Naomi is looking for. After hours of searching, Luis finally finds the hub cap and rushes to bring it to Naomi. Cofer states that Luis, â€Å"†¦waited to give her [Naomi] the first good thing he had given any one in a long time† (Cofer, pg. 240). This quote demonstrates that because of his new love, Luis was ready to change his personality for the better and that love can truly reconnect old flames from within oneself. â€Å"The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant† portrays a different message than that of â€Å"Catching the Moon†. In this short story, the narrator faces an internal conflict between choosing over his two passions—Sheila Mant and fishing. The narrator has always dreamed about impressing Sheila Mant, but he wavers when Sheila criticizes fishing for being dumb and boring. Regardless of her opinion, the narrator continues his mission of impressing Sheila by taking her on a boat ride and going to a popular party. On the way to the party, a fish gets caught on the fishing line the narrator left out  on the boat, and by the struggle the fish puts up, he knows that it’s the bass he’s been waiting all summer to catch. Emotions rush through his head, and even though the narrator has waited all summer for this fish, he chooses Sheila instead. The narrator cuts the line, goes to the party with Sheila, and has his heart broken when she chooses to ditch him for another guy. From this experience, the narrator learns that there are plenty of fish in the sea and that he shouldn’t have changed himself just to get a girl to like him. He even goes on to say that, â€Å"There would be other Sheila Mants in my life, other fish, and though I came close once or twice, it was those secret, hidden tugging in the night that claimed me, and I never made the same mistake again† (Wetherell, pg. 150). This quote demonstrates the story’s theme of not changing who you are for love because it will only result in regret and disappointment. Love is a very complex emotion. There are a lot of rules and regulations to love, as well as a lot of exceptions to these rules. All in all, in order to have a happy relationship, one must do want makes oneself happy. If someone’s happiness is put in jeopardy just because of a relationship, then the relationship was definitely not meant to be. Qualitative Social Research Essay

Sociological researcher, Steven Taylor, in his articles discusses the moral and ethical issues researchers must grapple with when they are carrying out studies of abusive behavior in institutions that have weak and disadvantaged people in our society. He cites his own 1 year work experience in a state institution for the mentally retarded to highlight his concerns. He describes it as being in deplorable physical condition and grossly understaffed. The attendants had little training and there were no therapy programs. They controlled the inmates through verbal and physical abuse directly to them and forcing them to clean up their own mess, including feces and urine. They also pitted some inmates against others, such as giving and withholding favors of coffee, food and drugs. Further they forced them to perform humiliating acts such as swallowing lit cigarettes and performing fellatio on each other. Mr. Taylor felt that in order to gain the trust of the attendants and thereby get more valid observations, he had to develop a rapport with them. He did so by drinking beer with them and socializing in other ways. He also played the naive student role and refrained from being critical about their methods. Nevertheless, he was troubled by the abusive behavior he witnessed, but in a quandary as to what to do about it. The attendants, for their part, rationalized their behavior by saying â€Å"the inmates don’t hurt like we do† and treating their actions as entertainment. Personally, I suspect they really didn’t know how to properly treat the inmates and were desperate to try anything that seemed to control them at least in the short run. The author then posed the question as to what the researcher should do in the face of this ethical dilemma during his study. He considered 4 alternatives ; 1)intervene. , for example to as attendant to stop or threaten to inform his supervisor. The problem with this approach is that it would spell an end to rapport with the attendants and thereby hinder the researcher’s ability to collect data on daily activities. 2) leave field. But research is needed to learn why people abuse. 3) blow the whistle. This would obviously shatter rapport and violate the confidentiality provisions of the ASA Code of Ethics. 4 continue study- which is what Mr. Taylor did. Obviously he felt that although this might not appear to be a good option it was the â€Å"least bad† to him. The author then suggests 4 ways to deal with immoral acts; 1 participation in abuses. He contends this is never justified, and that research goals can be accomplished without making human subjects suffer. Furthermore it is I clear violation of the ASA Code of Ethics. 2 ) observation of abuse. This may be the price to pay for conducting field research in immoral situations, but a person can never sit idly by in extreme cases like murder and rape. 3 inadvertently contribute to abuse because of reactive effects . It is clear that often this can’t be controlled by the researcher and therefore can’t be resolved by a professional code of ethics. However the researcher can refrain from encouraging it, for example pretending not to hear an invitation to join in such behavior. 4) doing something about abuse after study, that is, by publishing it and trying to get political action especially through mass media such as TV and newspapers. Finally Taylor concludes the researcher should 1) debate moral and ethical issues before embarking on a particular study and 2) make his own assessment about how to resolve professional ethics and personal morality.
